Fort Hood tragedy

Our hearts go out this morning to the friends and families of the 13 people slain and the 30 wounded in a wild burst of gunfire at the sprawling Fort Hood military installation outside Killeen, Texas.

The man police say is responsible the shootings, Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, remains in a coma this morning, but is expected to survive. He was shot by police.

President Barack Obama was right when he said it is bad enough that American soldiers are hurt and killed going in harm’s way, but almost inconceivable that they would face death and injury going about their daily routines at one of the safest places in the nation, a military installation.

As authorities unwrap the enigma surrounding Hasan, there will be clues about his slide toward violence, signs that things were not right. Perhaps those signals were ignored; perhaps they were too subtle, perhaps nobody wanted to believe that his objections to U.S. foreign policy could erupt in gunfire.

After all, who in their right mind could really believe - until now - that an Army doctor dedicated to improving and saving lives could take so many in such a manner.
