What a great idea

It is not often that we find ourselves agreeing with a Democrat, but Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, representing Arizona’s District 1, has come up with a great idea - cutting congressional salaries.

She is offering legislation that would roll back salaries by 5 percent, saving about $4.7 million overall, and setting aside automatic cost-of-living pay raises. Representatives not in leadership positions each make about $174,000 annually, and her suggested reduction would reduce that by $8,700.

In the overall scheme of things, a 5 percent cut is not much, but with the reckless spending that has been occurring, any movement away from the insanity is a good thing. Congress could set the example - before it drives the nation into bankruptcy.

That may not be far away. The national debt today is $12.5 trillion, with another $1.5 trillion estimated for this year.

No word yet on whether Kirkpatrick’s bill has a chance.
