Planet food: Tudor Road Mall serves up variety for almost every appetite

By SCOTT BANKS

Several weeks ago I had an epiphany as I drove into the mall on Tudor Road across from the Tozier Track. The mall has a plethora of places to eat: Uncle Joes Pizza, the legendary Thai Kitchen, Quiznos, Blaine’s Kitchen, Blue Fox Cocktail Lounge and Golden Gate Chinese Restaurant. In a satellite building across the parking lot is Taco King and What’s the Scoop?, a small ice cream and sandwich shop. That’s eight eateries from which to choose and all within 100 yards of each other.

It brightened my day knowing I have a 10-minute drive from house to get decent food. I didn’t say great food, but there are some gems. The attraction is that if the kids don’t want the Thai food you ordered, take the 50-yard drive to Quiznos and let them go crazy there. Choices are a beautiful thing.

Lunch and dinner

Ten minutes later, there was only one open table and a couple of people were sitting at the counter. This is on a Wednesday in early November in what was once called the Post Office Mall, a cemetery for many well-intentioned, if not ill-conceived businesses.
